A Biblical Picture of Success

The prophet Isaiah was a massive failure.

When God asked, “Whom shall I send?” Isaiah said, “Here I am! Send me!” To which God replied, “Go…”

So far so good.

But then God kept speaking to Isaiah; “Go, and say to this people: ‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.”

God says, “Go, but your words aren’t going to change the people who hear them.”

Oops.

This is a prophet we’re talking about. A prophet tasked with helping people understand truth… and God tells him that he should go out and preach but no one will understand.

If you’re looking at this objectively, you have to conclude that Isaiah was a massive failure. He’s a prophet who we expect to elicit repentance and revival. It’s kindof in the job description, right after “receive words from God.”

It goes like this: Prophet prophesies -> people listen -> people repent. But not with Isaiah. (Go read Isaiah 6:8-12.)

So he’s a big failure in the eyes of the world. He didn’t fulfill the most basic requirement for being a prophet. Fuh-HAIL-Yuh-HUR.

That’s silly though, right? He obviously wasn’t a failure.

Isaiah was successful because success is defined by God, not man.

What would be different today if you believed that in every action?
